Stetson Zelch. St Louis fire house #28
“I just stopped in to have somebody to talk to, I know this place doors are open”
This is Doc. He stops by once in a while, retired with 35 years on the job on the north side, came on in 1967. I don’t know a ton about him and never spoke with him much until yesterday. He came in and just wanted to hangout for a while. I sat and talked shop with him for an hour while he drank coffee. Everything from fires, medical calls, church, babies and marriages. He wanted to know all about my family, where I was from and what brought me here. A Vietnam veteran, a preacher since 1976, and married 28 years until he lost his wife in the tornado when their house came down. Since then he said doesn’t have many people to talk to.
When he told me that is when it hit me. That’s what makes this different than any other job. The guy hasn’t been on the job since 2002 but he knew he could walk in and be greeted like he just came off shift this morning. A cup of coffee, a chair and breakfast offered to him. When a run came out and the crews had to leave he stayed there and finished his coffee, nobody ran him out. He wasn’t treated like a visitor, he was treated like he belonged here. You don’t get that anywhere else or any other gig. When you retire at a normal job; everyone forgets you, what you did, and what you were apart of. Not here. Not in firehouses.
Don’t forget about these guys after their last shift. Don’t treat them like visitors.
